COMMENTS CONCERNING HISTORICAL MONUMENTS

Section 1:  This past week, one of our Brothers in the Department of North Carolina posted on social media under our organization’s name text that was in violation of General Order #27 Series 2019-2020, 16 June 2020 and General Order No. 02 Series 2017-2018, 21 August 2017. On the same day of this post, our Brother was advised of the violation and quickly removed his post.

Section 2:  In paragraph 1 of General Order #27, Commander-in-Chief Ed Norris states that “Due to the current political climate the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has seen an increase in the number of requests for comment concerning historical monuments.”
              
Section 3:  The Department Secretary/Treasurer and Camp Secretaries had forwarded last week to our Brothers of our Department General Order #27 Series 2019-2020, 16 August 2020 prior to the social media post mentioned in Section 1 above. However, in order to be sure all Brothers in our Department see the content of Commander-in-Chief Ed Norris’ General Order #27, it reads as follows:

“1. Due to the current political climate the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War has seen an increase in the number of requests for comment concerning historical monuments.”
“2. I want to remind our Brothers of two documents which should be reviewed.
a.    Past Commander-in-Chief Mark R. Day’s General Order No. 2, Series 2017-2018
b.    Battle Flag and Monument Policy (August 2017)”

Section 4: In order to be sure all Brothers in our Department see the content of Past Commander-in-Chief Mark Day’s General Order No. 02 Series 2017-2018, 21 August 2017, it reads as follows:

“1. I hereby direct, with the concurrence of the members of the Council of Administration, that all departments, camps, and individual brothers refrain from acting as a Media spokesmen or agent for the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War or to become involved in the pursuit of any civil actions (legal proceedings), on behalf of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, regarding the removal of veteran’s monuments, without first contacting the Commander-in-Chief and receiving authorization from him.”
“a. Acting as a spokesman is defined as making statements written or oral using the organizations name, symbols, letterhead, or while in the branded attire of the organization to include SVR uniforms and symbols.”
“b. This Order in no way is intended to preclude the exercise of your rights as an individual outside of the SUVCW.”
“2. The Commander-in-Chief will serve as the primary point of contact on all media inquiries involving the removal of veteran’s monuments. Media outlets should be directed to forward their inquiries to the SUVCW National Headquarters at 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park, Suite 240, Harrisburg, PA 17103-2411 Telephone: (717) 232-7000 Fax: (717) 412-7492.”

Section 5: As mentioned in the above Orders, they do not intend to preclude the exercise of our Brothers rights as an individual outside of the SUVCW. However, as stated in the Orders, there should be no communications about monuments under the name of the SUVCW without authorization of the Commander-in-Chief, and all Media inquiries should be referred to our National Organization as specified in the Orders.

Section 6: Please be sure that all our Brothers in the Department of North Carolina, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War are familiar with and comply with Commander-in-Chief Ed Norris’ General Order #27 Series 2019-2020, 16 June 2020 and Past Commander-in-Chief Mark Day’s General Order No. 02, 21 August 2017.
